Make Ten

Number bonds, and making ten to add

A ten-frame with seven lit. Which card fills it?

On the way This tile's page is up; the playable version follows.

What your child does

A ten-frame with some of its pips lit, and a question at the top: 7 and what make 10? Your child taps a card and it flies into the blank. Right, and the empty cells light up to complete the ten. Wrong, and it springs back.

Later rungs pair cards that make ten, then use the ten to add: 8 + 5 becomes 8 + 2 + 3. That is the move every later carry depends on, played until it is quick.

What it teaches

  • Breaking apart numbers to 10
  • Making ten to add
  • Subtracting through ten
  • Two-digit plus one-digit, carrying

This one is teaching ground: the board either comes right or it does not, and there is no wrong rule to name. The tiles that follow it do the diagnosing.
