Chart

Walk the hundred chart: right is one, up is ten

A token on 38. Add 5, and the finger crosses the edge into the next row.

On the way This tile's page is up; the playable version follows.

What your child does

A hundred chart your child adds and subtracts on. A token starts on a square, a prompt names a move, and your child drags the token to where it lands. Moving right is one, moving up is ten; the grid's two directions are tens and ones.

Crossing the right edge into the next row up is the carry, made geometric. The route the finger took stays on the board, so you can see whether the child went up a row or counted along one square at a time.

What it teaches

  • One more, one less
  • Ten more, ten less
  • Two-digit plus one-digit
  • Two-digit addition with carrying
  • Two-digit subtraction, borrowing
  • Adjusting numbers to add easier

Mistakes it recognises as your child plays

  • Ten more changes the ones digit
  • Adding the one-digit number to the tens
  • Forgetting the carried ten
  • Taking the small digit from the big one
  • Rounding to add, then forgetting to adjust

See what it finds.

Chart is also one of the games in the five-minute subtraction with regrouping (borrowing) check, which plays several tiles, picks the next problem from the last answer, and names the pattern it sees.
