Fractions and equivalent fractions
On the way This tile's page is up; the playable version follows.
What your child does
A whole laid out as a tidy rectangle of dots, and a fraction to make: light the right number of parts. Because the whole can be bigger than the denominator, 1/4 of 8 is two dots and 1/4 of 12 is three, which is what equivalent fractions mean before anyone says the words.
Later rungs add two fractions with the same pieces, where a child who adds the bottoms as well as the tops lights the wrong number of dots and the board says so.
What it teaches
- Unit fractions
- Fractions like 3/4
- Equivalent fractions
- Adding fractions, same denominator

Mistakes it recognises as your child plays
- Adding the tops and adding the bottoms
- Adding the same number to top and bottom
- Multiplying a whole number into top and bottom
See what it finds.
Fraction is also one of the games in the five-minute fractions: equal parts, equivalence, adding check, which plays several tiles, picks the next problem from the last answer, and names the pattern it sees.
